It’s like that old saying goes: How do you
eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
So step one - Start with a plan.
In the first few weeks, Ash and I had talked endlessly about this business and one thing was certain; we really had NO idea what we were doing. So with pen to paper, we decided to list everything that we felt was important, no matter how small or how silly. This list became our business plan, our sanity check, our guide book.
We needed a Tax ID number, contracts, billing software, a clearinghouse, a phone, two offices, office furniture, a PO Box, a marketing plan, two websites, a consultation with our tax man, etc., etc., etc., etc. Getting this all out in the open took away that fear of the unknown. It confirmed that we really did know where we were going and that we had a pretty good idea how to get there.
Step two - Get started.
Next, we reviewed our list erasing all redundancies, fears, worries and all non-issues, then added some priorities and divided up the list. This was not set in stone. So don’t be afraid to admit that someone may be better suited for a project than you. For example, the website project was way over my head, so Ashley took over and the result is awesome.
Step three - Silence your haters.
It seemed like people were coming back from the dead just to discourage us. Haters be like: “Why now?” ”You don’t have the time or money to pull this off.” “You are too old and she is too inexperienced” And my favorite, “you didn’t do it before so there must have been a reason why.”
Of course some of this is your own fears and insecurities trying to sabotage your dreams. So keep pushing until something happens.
Step four - Do your own thing.
Ash and I decided that for the first website we wanted it to be an informational source. We wanted it to provide tons of information about health insurance and we hoped that through advertising we could generate some needed income to finance the professional website. At the very least, we hoped to establish a place to introduce our medical billing company. Maybe we wasted valuable time that could have been spent on the “real” business. Maybe. But right or wrong we are committed to doing this our way. No regrets, no looking back, no second guessing.
Finally Step five - Enjoy the ride.
In this process we have laughed, screamed, cussed, worried and yes, we are enjoying this ride. We are recharging brain cells with new experiences and new challenges and we are keeping our fingers crossed, praying hard and dreaming out loud. Really you get so busy putting one foot in front of the other every day that you forget to slow down and just stop, breathe and be grateful.
We still have a long, long, long way to go and we are not where we wanted to be at this point but our goals remain the same so we are getting on our way.
Up next, it’s been a rough two months, but our logo is finally complete. Click the link below to find out how we did it.
